Pool Tips on Pool Cleaners - Polaris 280Is the Backup Valve Causing Problems? The three most common reasons the backup valve fails are... 1 - The valve case cracks 2 - The valve case collar cracks 3 - The valve mechanism fails and the gears won't turn or get stuck in one position When the case or case collar crack, some or most of the water pressure will spray out of the crack and the cleaner doesn't get enough pressure to work. When the internal mechanism fails, the valve usually gets stuck in one position and it won't cycle properly. To see if the backup valve is the problem, with the pool cleaner on pull the hose out of the water until just the backup valve is out of the water. Then check for leaks and make sure it is cycling properly. Once you identify the problem, just replace that part.
