Articles on Automatic Pool CleanersJandy Ray-Vac - Goes in CirclesIf your Jandy Ray-Vac is suddenly not cleaning the swimming pool the way it always has and you find it constantly going in circles at the deep end of the pool, it is a sure sign the pool cleaner needs maintenance. Below you will find several helpful troubleshooting tips reviewing the most probable reasons for this problem. Water Pressure - in order to work properly, the Ray-Vac pool cleaner needs to have the proper amount of water pressure. The first point of troubleshooting is making sure all the pool filters are clean, all baskets are clean, and making sure there is a good flow of water being produced by the pool pump. The most common reason the Ray-Vac goes in circles and stays in one spot in the pool is when the main pool filter is dirty resulting in a lack of sufficient water flow to move the Ray-Vac. Leaks in the Hoses - check the entire length of the cleaner hose for any leaks that might reduce the amount of water pressure reaching the Ray-Vac. Starting at the wall fitting, check the Jandy Quick Disconnect fitting, all the Jandy Swivels, and the Backup Valve (hydrotymer) for any significant leaks. Hydrotymer Not Working - the purpose of the Jandy Hydrotymer, otherwise known as a backup valve, is to periodically back the cleaner out corners and away from steps, or any other places in the pool it might get stuck. To make sure it is working properly, hold it out of the water for a few minutes and observe if the water flow cycles properly. Proper cycling will include a minute or so of water coming out of the Hydrotymer and a couple minutes where no water is coming out. If there is either a constant flow of water OR never a flow of water coming from the valve, it needs to be repaired or replaced. Pusher Hose Worn Out - the hose closest to the cleaner is the Jandy Pusher Hose. Sometimes when this hose gets old or worn, it will develop a bend in the middle, causing the cleaner to move in circles. Front Wheel Worn or Damaged - if the front wheel is worn or damaged and has more than just a small amount of play, it may need to be replaced. If the wheel is real loose, it may get stuck at an angle that may cause the Ray-Vac to go in circles or get stuck in one spot in the pool. For most cases where the Jandy Ray-Vac is not cleaning the pool efficiently and it is constantly spinning in circles in the deep end of the pool, following these troubleshooting tips will find the problem. If the problem still exists, consult a local pool service professional or the local pool store for help.
