Articles on Automatic Pool CleanersSuction Pool Cleaners - Benefits of an In-Line Leaf CanisterSuction pool cleaners, such as the Hayward Navigator, the Pentair Kreepy Krauly, and the Zodiac Baracuda, use suction from the pool pump to vacuum the dirt and debris from the bottom of the pool. This debris is sucked through the pool cleaner vacuum hose, then through the underground suction plumbing lines and eventually ends up in the pump strainer basket. One invaluable accessory for suction pool cleaners is the in-line leaf canister. An inline leaf canister, also know as an inline leaf trap is typically installed into the middle of the cleaner's vacuum hose, one or two hose lengths from the wall fitting. Its main purpose is to collect larger debris before it reaches the underground plumbing and eventually the pump strainer basket. This one small piece of equipment is an invaluable addition and will benefit the pool's owner in the following ways. Prevent a Clogged Pump Strainer Basket Without an inline leaf trap, the suction pool cleaner will vacuum dirt and debris and send it straight to the main pool pump strainer basket. If the pump basket gets too full, water flow can become completely restricted creating a situation where the pool water will not be providing circulation and filtration will stop until the pump basket is emptied. In the worse case the pool pump can overheat and become damaged. With an inline leaf trap, if the trap gets full, only the suction to the pool cleaner will be restricted and only the cleaner will stop working. But the clogged leaf trap will have no effect on the main pool pump, which will still be able to pull water and create good circulation and filter the pool water. If this happens, the bottom of the pool might be dirty, but the pool pump won't burn out and the pool water won't be green. Inline Leaf Canister is Very Visible One simple benefit to installing a leaf canister is its visibility. Instead of going to the pool equipment pad and removing the pump lid to check to see if the pump basket is clogged, it will only take a quick glance into the swimming pool to see if he leaf canister needs to be emptied. Avoid Underground Plumbing Blockage A real serious and expensive problem that can occur with suction side pool cleaners that don't have an inline leaf trap installed is a blocked underground plumbing line. This can happen when larger debris gets sucked into the cleaner and makes its way into the underground plumbing. If any of the debris is just the right size and shape, it can get wedged into a corner of the plumbing. Eventually more and more debris can start accumulating in this same area until the line has a substantial blockage limiting water flow and filtration. Unfortunately, this problem is usually not diagnosed until the pool is already having problems. By then it is too late and the plumbing is blocked to the point where the solution will be an expensive one. The price for an inline leaf canister for a suction pool cleaner can range between $50 and $100. Given the clear benefits that this product provides, this is a very small investment that can make life much easier for pool owners and help to avoid other costly pool problems.
