Articles on Automatic Pool CleanersRayVac Stops on the Main DrainIf your RayVac pool cleaner keeps stopping on the main drain, the first step in finding this problem is to pull the cleaner away from the main drain while the cleaner is operating to see if the cleaner is otherwise working normally. If the RayVac still isn't working when it is not near the main drain, the problem probably has nothing to do with the drain. If the cleaner seems to be working properly while away from the main drain, try the following troubleshooting tips to help solve the problem. Is the Suction on the Main Drain Too Strong - It could be as simple as having too much suction directed to the main drain. If too strong, this suction will grab onto the RayVac at the main drain and the cleaner may not be able to work its way away. Adjust the suction away from the main drain to see if the cleaner stops getting stuck. There should be some suction at the main drain in order to filter the dirt that gets pushed there by the cleaner, but in order to troubleshoot this problem, temporarily close the main drain suction. If the cleaner still gets stuck on the drain, try the next tip. Don't forget to redirect some suction to the main drain after this test. Backup Valve Malfunctioning - the backup valve on the feed hose should periodically pull the RayVac away from the main drain or from any other area in the pool the cleaner might get stuck.. If the backup valve isn't able to move the cleaner away from these areas of the pool, check the it to make sure it is not cracked or damaged in any other way and that it is functioning properly. Hold it out of the pool while in operation and making sure it is cycling on and off properly. Every few minutes it should start squirting a good stream of water that will pull the cleaner backwards, then slowly shut off and allow the cleaner to continue cleaning the pool. If these ideas don't help find out why the RayVac is stopping on the main drain, call your local pool store for help.
